I’ve heard a
lot about sustainable urbanism, especially because I study architecture, and
there is an important subject about urbanism where we learn all these things. I
totally agree with sustainable urbanism, because the cities have grown enough
without control by the sprawl system. This way of building cities is why we
have so many environmental problems everywhere. Overpopulation problems are the
main cause of the sprawl and high-density sprawl, so now we have to make
something of it.
We need to
start taking care of how we build cities and how we organize them. And
especially, we need to design urban projects with the objective of getting a better life of the users, and not our own economic benefit.
I think
this has been the problem that causes the sprawl: the importance of the
profits. Right now most of the people are interested more in earning money than
in the quality of their work, because the company that builds the sprawl cities
get rich, but they don’t care about the environment or the quality of life that
the buyers have. And of course this has not been controlled by the government,
who should notice this problem and solve it, making this sustainable urbanism
projects.
No one can
say it is impossible because there are the examples of Europe or China, with
their renewal projects that actually work.
